St. Swithun's Church Bathford is clearly visible from all approaches to the village.

There has probably been a church on the site (originally Bathford was known just as Forde) since the tenth or eleventh century. Parts of the present building date from earlier than 1780.

The church has a Tower (which on occasion is open to the public) and a peel of six bells. The panoramic views from the tower are shown on the two frames below and are worth the climb up the 107 steps!

In the churchyard can be seen memorial inscriptions to Ann, sister of the Lord Admiral Nelson, and Lord Nelson's nephew William Matcham.

Eleazer Pickwick, a former Mayor of Bath, is also buried there. Pickwick founded the coaching business in 1779 from which Charles Dickens is reported to have taken the title and name for Pickwick Papers.
